Battle @ the Barn – Adults
January 27-28, 2018

Registration opens soon!

Welcome to the Battle @ The Barn box tournament!  This box tourney will be held in Historic Irvington at the Ellenberger Ice rink that we now call “The Barn”.  The Barn is an old ice rink that was used by the Indianapolis Checkers, who have since relocated to Colorado.  While in Indy the Checkers were part of the New York Islanders during their Stanley Cup dynasty.  It is old, dark, durty and full of history but we now call the Barn our beloved home and it is perfect for box!

  • 22 min running half’s
  • One 30 second time out per game.  Clock does stop.
  • Stop time last minute if score is within 3 goals

Download the USBOXLA rule book here.

Rules – We are using NLL rules with the following changes & clarifications

  • Field is a full sized NHL rink (200′ x 85′) and is on polished concrete.  Each bench has 1 door.
  • Games will be two 15 minute half’s with running time.  3 minute half time.  Stop time the last 2 minutes if the score is within 3 goals.
  • Each team will gets one 30 second time out per game.  A time out does stop the clock unless it is the last 2 minutes and a there is a 3 goal or less differential.
  • Face-offs after each goal.
  • If a ball hit the netting it will be out of bounds.  Shot off goalie or a defender will stay with the offensive team.
  • Man Ball is not allowed.  On a loose ball all players must go for the ball.
  • We took out ice pick and to clarify any check that does not hit stick is a slash.
  • Slashing:  Rule 66 in the NLL rule book: SLASHING Slashing is the act of swinging a player’s stick on an opponent. Any forceful or powerful chop with the stick on an opponent’s body or stick, shall be penalized as slashing whether the player has possession of the ball or not. Non-aggressive stick contact to the stick or hands of a ball carrier should not be penalized as slashing. At the referees’ discretion, a technical violation or a time served penalty shall be assessed to any offensive player who slashes an opponents’ stick or body based on the severity of the slash. In game situations where players are contesting a loose ball, a player is permitted to check a non-ball carriers’ stick while the ball is within three yards.
  • Minor Penalties – 1 min releasable on a goal.
  • Major Penalties – 2 min not releasable on a goal. Any player that receives 2 Major penalties in a game will be removed from that game.
  • Gross Misconduct – Game and possible tournament disqualification.
  • Face-offs – The two players must contest the ball when the Referee blows the whistle. The ball must come out of the dotted circle. You may not trap, clamp, or “dead stick” (clamp or trap and not move your stick) the ball with the intent to withhold play inside or outside of the dotted circle or the opponent’s stick or body. This is illegal and a technical penalty for illegal procedure shall be called. Any ‘overclamp’ which is a stick clamping on top of the original clamp is a violation. The ball shall be awarded to the non offending team.
  • No takeout checks – May result in game and tournament disqualification.  Just like the NFL and NLL are doing now.
  • 30 second shot clock. Starts on a change of possession.
  • Teams have 10 seconds to clear over midfield even when man down.
  • Full box pads are required. If you play without them you are doing so at your own risk.
  • Playing with a broken stick is illegal.  If your stick breaks you must drop it immediately but can continue to play.
  • Once you brig the ball over midfield you cannot go back.  A shot on goal that rebounds over the midfield is a live ball.  Referee will blow the ball dead at his discretion.  Once blown dead the ball will be put into play within 5 yards of the midfield line or goal line extended, which ever is closest.
  • If a team has 3 or more infractions (during the same time frame) by 3 different players then offending team will be awarded a penalty shot. Example:  2 players are in the sin bin and a 3rd commits a foul, this will result in a penalty shot.  If a goal is scored then all minor penalties are released.
  • You cannot pass or redirect the ball to a goalie while he is in the crease.
  • Penalty Shot – Any dressed player on the offended team may take the penalty shot.

  •  Games that are tied at the end of regulation will go to a shootout.  A championship game that is tied will play one 3 minute sudden victory overtime followed by a shootout if needed
