Lacrosse Participation in the U.S. Continues to Climb

BALTIMORE - National lacrosse participation increased 8.4 percent in 2009, according to research by US Lacrosse for its annual participation report. There were 568,021 lacrosse players who were members of organized teams across the country in 2009, from the youth level all the way on up through the professional ranks.

No. 7 Oregon Runs by Washington, Improves to 5-0

EUGENE, OR. - Oregon men's lacrosse continued its unbeaten streak Saturday afternoon after handing northwest rival Washington a 15-3 loss. In the third game of a four game home stretch, the Ducks took 55 shots on goal and the steady weekend performance helped the team move up to #7 in the latest national MCLA poll.

Colorado State Downs New Hampshire to Improve to 5-1

WLax: IWLCA Poll for Women's Division I (3/08)

The Northwestern Wildcats remain on top of the poll and hold off the Maryland Terrapins, but UNC was able to move up to No. 3 to give the ACC two of the top three schools. Rutgers also moved into the rankings, making the Big East the first conference to have five schools in the poll since the ALC had five schools in 2007. Stanford moved up five spots to enter the top 10 for the first time in 2010 and was the fastest mover of the week.

Adelphi remained on top of the Division II poll for the third week of the 2010 season as they have not dropped a game and took all 10 first-place votes. The same 10 teams stayed in the rankings, with two pairs of schools switching ranks.

Franklin & Marshall remained in the top spot of the rankings, and their opponent in the 2009 title game, Salisbury, moved up to the No. 2 slot, edging past Gettysburg, who dropped to No. 3. Three new teams entered the rankings this week, including a pair of Capital Athletic Conference schools as Mary Washington and Stevenson both moved into the top 20. Stevens of the Empire 8 jumped up six spots to land at No. 11 as the week's fastest mover.

WLax: Quillinan Reaches 200 Pts. as #7 Syracuse Downs Vermont

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Syracuse senior Halley Quillinan (Glenmont, N.Y.) became the fourth player in school history to record 200 career points in the No. 7 women's lacrosse squad's 19-7 victory against Vermont on Monday, March 8 in Jacksonville, Fla. Quillinan had three goals to give her 201 career points, which ranks fourth on Syracuse's all-time scoring list.

The USILA Division I Men's Lacrosse Coaches' Poll for March 8 has been released. Defending champion Syracuse is again #1, garnering all 10 first-place votes (13 were cast last week). The remainder of the of top 5 is also unchanged from the previous poll. New to the list this week is Lafayette, with Navy dropping out of the top 20.

The USILA Division II Men's Lacrosse Coaches' Poll for March 8 has been released. Defending champion C.W. Post claimed the top spot again, garnering nine of the 11 first-place votes. There was relatively little movement elsewhere in the rankings, but Queens, on the strength of a 4-1 start, jumped into the 10th position.

The USILA Division III Men's Lacrosse Coaches' Poll for March 8 has been released. Gettysburg, which upset defending champion Cortland, has moved from third into the top spot with Cortland falling to 5th. Stevenson, Roanoke, and Salisbury in second through fourth places. St. Lawrence vaulted to #12 following its defeat of Haverford, which dropped to #14.

US Lacrosse Announces Finalists for 2010 Hall of Fame

BALTIMORE - US Lacrosse released the list of 24 individuals that are to be included as finalists on the 2010 National Lacrosse Hall of Fame Men's and Women's Top-12 Final Ballots. It is from these ballots that the respective National Lacrosse Hall of Fame voting committees will select the 2010 induction class. US Lacrosse will announce the inductees over Memorial Day weekend.

Stanford, Calif. - The No. 15 women's lacrosse team scored early and often on its way to a 19-7 win over Davidson. The Cardinal scored the games first eight goals and never looked back, improving to 3-2 on the season. Dana Lindsay led the Cardinal with four goals, while Claire Hubbard contributed five assists.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The No. 2-ranked Stevenson men's lacrosse scored six of the game's final seven goals, including two from senior Dave Cougler (Rochester, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley), to blow open a one-goal game in the third quarter en route to an 11-5 victory over No. 16 Western New England Sunday at Caves Athletics Complex.

In the Division I contest, the sledding was tough and scores low, but two contestants nevertheless managed to have a perfect slate. In the Division III contest, where there were also several difficult games to pick, no one had all 10 winners. In fact, the best mark was just 8 correct.

#4 Merrimack Opens with One-Goal Win at Florida Southern

LAKELAND, FL - The fourth-ranked Merrimack men's lacrosse team opened its 2010 season with a 12-11 victory over Florida Southern University Sunday afternoon. Freshman Corey Lunney (Little Silver, NJ) led the way with five goals, three assists and 13 shots in his collegiate debut.
